in the end

So, the deadline for QuiltCon has come and gone… I only had three entries ready to go, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. I’ll share some of my fails wit ya!

First, I made a fabric panel at Spoonflower & it was glorious. The key word being “was”. I started working on a corner and thoroughly messed up a large seam. When I went to rip it apart & rubbed the color off the fabric. Oh crap. I thought, “I can just order some more of this section of the panel!” But for whatever reason, I couldn’t get that particular portion of the design into the fat quarter preview on Spoonflower. I tried all the repeat options & nothing worked… I couldn’t afford to buy the entire two yard panel, so I decided to abandon ship for now. Here it is in its current state:

The second fail was due to fabric, as well. I ordered four yards for my background from a company in New Jersey & well, well, well- Hello, hurricane Sandy!! It wasn’t able to be shipped for over two weeks. When it got here, I opened the box & it was not at all what I ordered!! It was supposed to be a heathered gray, but I got a pale lilac solid. Talk about disappointed. I actually cried over fabric! & I am still working with their customer service department to this day trying to get a solution!! Argh. So, I went shopping all over for a similar fabric, but I just couldn’t find it. The heart wants what it wants, you know? So, that quilt was doomed.

Third was a giant appliqué quilt that never made it past the pattern stage. I think when I saw the sheer scale of the undertaking, I got spooked. Here’s the full sized patterns I got from my printer, good ol’ Miller Blueprint:

In the end, though, I entered two old quilts & my new reverse appliqué miniature. I’m pretty happy about it, too, because I felt like I had a productive November.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!! Bring on Christmas! 🙂 I’m going to go hang lights on my house now. In 80 degree weather… r

I got my free swatch from Spoonflower.com today. Eeeeee! They are so cute! The colors stayed true, except for the cheeks on the redhead- They skewed to the purple side of pink. But otherwise, I’m so pleased! I had my whole collection planned around this print for Project Selvage with pearl snap polka dots & straw hat texture prints & fancy boot applique patterns. But it didn’t come to pass. I have all my sketches by the computer, still. Maybe someday I’ll make time to create all the repeats… So much to do!

quilting detail

I’ve decided to put one of my babies in the Spring Blogger’s Quilt Festival @ Amy’s Creative Side. Say hello to “Happy”! She measures 72 inches square and was finished early in 2009 for the Dallas Quilt Show. HOWEVER, she actually began her journey way back in 2007. I created the pattern in Illustrator and was determined to make this quilt with a pieced background and needle-turned appliqué elements. I worked for months & month & MONTHS, but I never felt like it was going to be done. Enter 2008 & the birth of Spoonflower!

I designed several little bits of artwork to create my own fabric & had a lot of fun being one of the first people to use this wonderful service. One night, I was sifting through files to create a pattern repeat & accidentally opened up the file for Happy. It was a lightbulb moment! I took the entire applique design and split it in half. Then, I uploaded it to Spoonflower as a four yard long continuous design & waited for my order to come home to me from North Carolina. I sliced the two halves apart, sewed them back together as a whole unit with a single long seam up the center, & commenced hand quilting! Being a deadline driven person, I entered it into the Dallas Quilt Show in the hopes of finally seeing a finished product one day. & I finished. Well, I almost finished… My quilting doesn’t go all the way out to the edges & I’m pretty sure I was still sewing on the binding during the car ride over to drop it off at Dallas Market Hall! Oh well. Live & learn.

I pulled Happy out of the brown paper bag she’s resided in since March of 2009 and it made me a little sad. She deserves more love than that! But I have no idea what to do with her, so she primly sits on my guest bed waiting for me to figure everything out. Oh, & I almost forgot to mention that she has a cutie polka dot backing!

Well, thanks for stopping by! Enjoy more quilts from the Blogger’s Festival!!!
